Chapter twelve

Premonition

I can’t help myself—tears stream down my face as I run to our room, slamming the door with all the might my petite frame can muster.

I don’t want to go anywhere, especially not the fucking shops. I want to hide under the duvet and stay in bed all day.

But within minutes there is a knock on my door, Emilio gently reminding me that we have to leave before the hour is up.

He returns every five minutes, threatening to break down the locked door if I don’t comply. I know he would do it too—Emilio takes his orders seriously.

Fine! I force myself to get up, to take a shower, to wash the smell of Dante off my skin. I don’t want to think of him anymore. Yet everything in this house is his, including me.

As I gather my purse, I secretly hope that Dante is waiting by the door ready to apologize. But he isn’t. His study door is firmly shut. Not this time, Emilio warns as I try to squeeze past him. I bang my fists on his chest until Carlo drags me into the car. Assholes, all of you!

I slam the car door. I don’t remember the last time I was this furious.

“I’m sorry, Miss Matthews. We have our orders,” Carlo says sheepishly, turning around to look at me.

“You didn’t have to carry me out of the house,” I reply bitterly.

“You left us little choice,” the other hunk of meat in the front seat says. He is one of the newer guards. I don’t know his name yet and I am definitely not going to ask it now. I hate being told what to do, and I especially hate being bullied by men more than twice my size. That feeling of complete helplessness is so triggering. I feel like a little girl again.

“Just drive, Carlo. Get me out of here.” As much as I would rather be alone, I know it’s not an option. I am never alone, not after the incident at the sex shop when those attackers almost got me. It was the second time Dante saved my life. To be fair, he was the only reason my life was in danger in the first place. I didn’t need saving until I met him. Well, that wasn’t entirely true…

Carlo wordlessly starts the van, slowly backing out of the large driveway.

As usual, we’re stopped at the gate for a vehicle full search and retina scan before the heavy nine-foot iron gate begins to roll open.

I’m still sulking, glaring at the guard manning the gate.

“Where are the rest?” Carlo remarks, pressing his forefinger to the fingerprint scanner. When tensions with the Ricci family first started to rise, Dante had beefed up the already-secure security. Just in case.

The guard shrugs. “It’s just me today. Two called in sick and the rest are out collecting debts.” He walks over to check the boot.

“That seems irregular.” Carlo is suspicious as always—it’s his job after all. He surveys the perimeter through his dark sunglasses, almost habitually.
